Learning How to Craft

taken from vgcrafters

The following is a complete walkthrough on learning how to get started with crafting. This is literally a step by step guide and should be a good thing to read through if you find you are stuck in the very beginning steps of crafting.

Find the Crafting Advisor

The first step towards learning to craft is to find the Crafting Advisor NPC. The Crafting Advisor also provides a complete Tutorial Dialogue which explains the basics of how to craft. You will likely want to refer to this several times as you begin.

Upon talking with a Crafting Advisor, they will offer three quests called:

  • The Path of the Artificer
  • The Path of the Blacksmith
  • The Path of the Outfitter

Choose a Profession

Accept one of these quests above that interests you.

  • Highlight the quest in the NPC dialog box and click accept.
  • The quest will tell you to visit the Master trainer for that crafting profession.
  • Walk up to the Master trainer and speak to them.
  • Complete the quest by highlighting the sword with the green tick symbol and press continue and then complete.

Profession Quest: Crafting Tools

The next quest the Master trainer will offer us is the quest called (profession name) Training: Crafting Tools.

Accept this quest by clicking on the sword with a star symbol in the dialog box, then click accept.

This quest will take us to the crafting equipment supplier who will give us our first set of crafting tools.

Talk to the crafting equipment supplier and turn in the crafting tools quest by clicking on the sword with the green tick.
Click Continue and then Complete.

We have just been given our first set of crafting tools!
We will need these to craft with in the crafting profession we have chosen, be it Artificer, Outfitter or Blacksmith.

Profession Quest: Using Utilities

If we go back to our Master trainer, they will have another quest available for us. This quest is to get our Utilities, which we also need for crafting.

Accept the (Profession Name) Training: Using Utilities quest.

This quest will send us to the Crafting Utility Supplier NPC.

Walk up to the Crafting Utility Supplier and Complete the quest.

Upon completing the quest, you are given the other main component used in crafting, Utilities.

Walk back to the Master Trainer and they will have a third quest for you.

Profession Quest: The Crafting Process

Accept the quest called (Profession Name) Training: The Crafting Process.

This quest will introduce us to the basic method of crafting, without the troublesome components known as complications.
Now, before we can start crafting, we need to equip our tools and Utilities. We do this by placing the tools in our tool belt and our Utilities in our Utility Pouch.

Click on the character screen icon which is located along the bottom tool bar.
A window will pop-up showing the paper doll of your adventuring page. Click the Anvil icon on the far left and it will switch to your crafting page.

There are three tabs at the bottom of this page, but for now we want to work with the page you are presented with by default, the Equipment page.
This screen is what we will use to equip our crafting tools and crafting utilities.

Click on the Chest Icon (Inventory) and we should see the contents of that inventory bag.

In this picture we see our inventory bag open and it contains a tool belt(G), several tools (H, J, K), a Utility Pouch(L), and several Utilities(M, N, P).

Before we can place any items into our tool belt or our utility pouch, we must equip them first. Click and Drag the toolbelt to position X as shown in the crafting page below.
Click and Drag the Utility Pouch to position Y as shown in the crafting page below.

Image:LHTC_2.JPG

Right click on the Tool Belt icon and you will be presented with an open bag of three slots.

This is where we will place the three tools we received earlier.

Now, right click on the Utility Pouch and drag the Utilities to this large bag that appears.
Press the Escape key once and this will close all open bags.

Now we are ready to craft!

The refining table of the Artificer
The refining table of the Artificer

Walk to the appropriate crafting station that is mentioned in our "Crafting Process" Quest.

Crafting Stations are simply work benches which are used for different stages in crafting.

As you mouse over the stations, your cursor will change to an anvil. Right click the station and a crafting dialog box will appear.
Click "Special Recipes" and then highlight the only recipes we currently know.
If you do not see a recipe, most likely you are at the wrong table, try another table.
Click Begin
Now you are going to setup your crafting table. For this quest, everything is already setup for us, so just click Begin.

You should be presented with the following layout, this is our main crafting screen.

Image:LHTC_3.JPG

Now, the objective in crafting is to get the last stage (5) completed before we run out of action points (6). Each crafting action we take removes some action points from out total(6), and we are successful in crafting when we complete the last step with some action points remaining.

To Start, Click (1)

Image:Wiki_tip.jpg
Why are the numbers (2) and (3) grouped close together in the image on the left?
This means that the progress below the icons will be filled 50% by (2) and 50% by (3).

This will bring up the following image:

Image:LHTC_4.JPG

For each number (1) through (5), that you press, one or more symbols will appear below where the number (9) currently is. If there is just one icon like that shown above at number (9), then you should click that icon to perform that crafting action.
Each crafting action takes a number of action points, so you must be careful to watch how many action points you are using in order to not run out of points. If you do, you will be forced to click "Cancel" on the main crafting screen and you will lose your materials.

On the above image, only the icon above the (9) has appeared, so you have to click on that icon to progress in the crafting process.

Please Note: You are working through the process by pressing 1 to 5. By pressing each number, one or more icons will appear below, and you are then to choose which lower icon you want to press.

Pressing the icon above the (9) moves you to the next stage in the crafting of this recipe and its number, (2). Press number (2) and two icons now appear this time.
You can choose between these two icons, one will improve the progress of this stage, the other will increase the Quality (8).
By pressing the icon that moves the progress as opposed to the quality, you will see the progress bar move up to 50%.

The reason this only moves up to 50% and then the Icon grays out is because (2) and (3) are linked together on this stage. (2) will make up the first 50% and (3) will make up the last 50%.

Now press (3) and click the only icon that shows up below. Keep pressing that lower icon until our progress for Stage 3 fills 100%. When this is done, you will notice that both (2) and (3) should be grayed out, preventing you from being able to click those again.

This allows us to move onto the next stage: (4).

Pressing (4) gives us only one lower icon, so we don't have much choice but to press that until our progress meter reaches 100%.

We are now on the final stage!

Pressing (5) gives us two lower icons, so we must choose one of these to complete the stage. One of these maintains whatever quality we have on the item but costs us 100 action points, the other costs us no action points but lowers our quality.
At this point, we are not concerned with quality so choose whichever one you can to complete the stage and also the craft.
You should now see a loot window, click the loot to pick up what you have crafted!

Complications and Quality

Go back to the Master trainer as they will have another quest for you called (Profession Name) Training: Complications and Quality. This is our second introductory crafting quest which introduces us to two more relevant parts in crafting:

  • Quality of the crafter item
  • We briefly touched on the quality of the crafted item before, and there are more icons or Actions that wil become availiable as we progress more in skill. If you want to improve quality, you must choose the actions that show up below that say they improve quality.

Complications

Complications can be beneficial or destructive to our crafting of an item.

Lets continue with the quest

Accept the quest if you have not already done so, from the Master Trainer and walk back to the crafting station we were just using.
Right click on the crafting station again to bring up the crafting setup box. Click Special Recipes, then highlight the only recipe we have listed.

Image:Wiki_bonus.jpg
Did you know?
As you gain levels in crafting, you will be allowed to add more and more items to the table!

Once the recipes is highlighted, click Begin to setup our crafting table.

As you may have noticed before, there is a tablespace figure showing. This tells us how many Utilities we can fit on our table, this is important. It is because not only are Utilities necessary for both progress and quality, but also because some Utilities can remove complications.

Click Begin

Continue as you did before, but note the image below:

Image:LHTC_5.jpg

The action which has (14) above it is the action that is primarily used to increase the quality of the crafted item.

Click on (14) until the quality is what you desire and then move on to (13).

Be careful not to increase the quality too much and run out of action points or you may be unable to finish the craft and be forced to click Cancel.

In the next image, we see we have a complication. Most complications are destructive, but some we can ignore and in time the complication will disappear.

Image:LHTC_6.jpg

By moving your mouse over the icon that is in the top row of the complication bar (The icon that looks like smoke), we can see the complication details on a tool tip that should popup.
Then, by clicking the icon below it (16), the "remedy" will appear (17).
When we press the remedy (17) we will spend some action points to work towards removing the complication.

If we leave the complication alone, which is what we are going to do for now, the complication will run its term (Usually 5 rounds) and then disappear on its own.
Go back to the 1 - 5 in the crafting window and finish making the item as we did in the last quest, ignoring ant more complications that may appear.
Complete the process and loot the item.

You have now just finished making your second item!

Return to the Master trainer with the finished product.

Crafting Quest: Proper Attire

Your Master trainer will now give us a new quest named (Profession name) Training: Proper Attire.

Accept this quest.

This quest will take us back to the crafting advisor who will give us more crafting gear.

Walk back to the crafting advisor and complete the Proper Attire quest.
To equip those additional pieces of crafting attire, press "C" to bring up the character screen again.
Click on the crafting tab (Anvil) and open our inventory as well.Find the clothing and Drag and Drop it one by one into the correct slots on the crafting character sheet.

Once we have done that, the crafting advisor will have another quest for us, this one introduces us to work orders.

Work Orders

Work orders are the primary way we skill up as a crafter. NPCs hire us to craft items in which they provide the raw materials and when we complete the work order, we skill up and get rewards for making the item.

  • Accept the quest from the crafting advisor.
  • Walk to the taskmaster that you were told to speak to and speak with them(right click).
  • Click the "I'm looking for work" dialogue sentence and accept the work order "Introductory Work Order"

These introductory work orders introduce us to both the refining and finishing tables.
Crafting for work orders is just like crafting anything else, the taskmaster is the user who buys the end product. The taskmaster will give us rewards for completing the work order successfully and we will gain skillups in our crafting skills.

When you have accepted the work order, find the appropriate crating station, both for your profession (Artificer, Outfitter, or Blacksmith) as well as the type of station needed, either finishing or refining.
Right click the station, the crafting setup menu will appear. Select the Work Order recipes and highlight the recipe. Click Begin.
Once you have completed the work order, return to the crafting advisor who will give us our next quest.

Assembly Station

Accept the Assembly Station quest and then find an Assembly Station.
Right click the station and a new screen will pop-up:

Image:LHTC_7.jpg

Click on the drop down box to the left of (A) and choose your profession.
Click on the assembly recipe, in this example it is called "Assorted Tool Parts", and then click Assemble.
Loot the new item.

This quest will give us a slightly better crafting tool for use.
Once this is completed, the new tool will be in out inventory, not in our toolbelt, you should move it back there again by opening your character sheet "C" and opening your tool belt again.

Go back to the crafting adviser to complete the quest.

Now we can learn recipes that we can keep!

Go to your profession instructor, who is different than your Master trainer and ask to learn new recipes. Once we learn these new recipes, they will remain in your abilities book under the crafting tab.

Image:Wiki_tip.jpg
Did you know there is a chat channel devoted to crafting?
Type /join craft to join this channel and your fellow crafters.

So, What Now?

Now that you have completed the introductory quests, you will be on your own for a little while. Do not despair though, there is still plenty to learn and plenty of work orders to complete.

  • The first thing you should do is visit both the refining and finishing taskmasters for work orders and complete these in order to raise your skills and your crafting level.
  • You can also start making items on your own by simply acquiring the raw materials needed and going to the correct crafting stations.
  • Good Luck!
