Quest Offering:
- Lazugrum motions you close. "This latest Gulgrethor attack is too well timed to be coincidence. The governor believes there may be Gulgrethor spies in our midst, and I think you are the perfect candidate to uncover who is leaking information to the Gulgrethor."
- "There are many leads to follow, do each in turn and gather what evidence you can before presenting the report to Governor Jalixfin."
Npc Dialogue
Petitioner Lazugrum
- "Despicable Gulgrethor!" bellows Petitioner Lazugrum. "Resorting to sabotage and spying, rather than straight forward conlicts."
- You ask, "Isn't that just good tactics?"
- Petitioner Lazugrum says, "Of course it's good tactics, but the Gulgrethor aren't known for them. They must have someone helping them, someone we haven't seen."
- You say, "If they do, there's nothing you can do about it unless you fight fire with fire."
- Petitioner Lazugrum answers, "Oh, we're already doing that, bit it's tough work. The Gulgrethor are notoriously difficult to infiltrate."
- "Even if you could just prevent their spies and saboteurs, wouldn't that be enough?" you inquire.
- Petitioner Lazugrum says, "Probably. But they've been a step ahead of us lately."
- You say, "It's not as if a war were coming any time soon. The Gulgrethor know too well that a massive invasion would fail at this point in time. Couldn't you divert some resources to hedging out spies?"
- "I've talked to the warchief and he disagrees," says Petitioner Lazugrum. "He believes that even if the Gulgrethor know our troop strength, they cannot exploit it for any real gain."
- You say, "So rather than rish weakening the army, he's willing to let the Gulgrethor know exactly how strong it is."
- Petitioner Lazugrum replies, "That is correct. Personally, I think it's a mistake, but who am I to argue with the warchief?"
- You ask, "Isn't the security of Martok more in the realm of the governor's jurisdiction though?"
- Petitioner Lazugrum considers this. "I suppose it is. But the use of the army during war time is strictly in the hands of the warchief."
- You ask, "Whe not use personnel not in the army to help you root out the enemy?"
- Petitioner Lazugrum says, "That's a fantastic idea. Hey, you looking for a job?"
Head Shaman Bolog
- "This night the spirits are active, something important must be happening somewhere."
- You say, "Head Shaman Bolog, I have a task for you."
- Head Shaman Bolog says, "What does the war council require from me now?"
- You reply, "Lazugrum believes that there is a spy within Martok. Perhaps the spirits are being manipulated by them."
- "I have sensed no such presence in the ether since the being Cahedron revealed itself," he says.
- "Perhaps one of their warseers is jogging the information from the spirits?" you suggest.
- Head Shaman Bolog says, "Potentially possible. If I know what information was being dought, I could tell for certain whether or not one of the spirits has betrayed us."
- You say, "In regards to the recent attack upon Grimsea Watch."
- Head Shaman Bolog ponders. "None of the spirits I know have been tapped for auguries on that place."
- "Can you think of anyone else that may have tapped those spirits?" you ask.
- Head Shaman Bolog lists some names off in his head and then shakes his head. "No. But I do have a thought."
- "What is it?" you demand.
- Head Shaman Bolog says, "Some of the Grimsea defenders were rotated down to Gwarn's Boundary about a week ago. Maybe they have a spy in their midst sending information back through the Wildgrowth Forest."
- You consider this a moment. "Would the Gulgrethoer brave the Wildgrowth Forest for such information?"
- "How effective is the attack?" asks Head Shaman Bolog.
- You nod and say, "I understand your point. I'll check out Gwardn's Boundary."
General Zowt
- "General Zowt," you begin. "I'm investigating a possible security breach for the governor. May I speak with you?"
- General Zowt nods, "Of course. What sort of security breach?"
- You say, "The Gulgrethor attack on Grimsea Watch is too well timed and coordinate to be a coincidence. The war council believes there must be a Gulgrethor spy somewhere in our midst."
- "And you suspect someone under my command may be the suspect?" asks General Zowt. "Who do you suspect?"
- You reply, "Part of the Grimsea Watch Garrison was moved here just recently, were they not?"
- General Zowt says, "That is correct."
- You ask, "Any disappearances?"
- General Zowt replies, "None. But I understand why it would make sense for the suspect to be here. Our proximity to the Wildgrowth Forest means that getting a message south is potentially faster."
- You nod. "So all soldiers are accounted for. I want you to put your solders on high alert until the war council says otherwise."
- General Zowt says, "I will assume an official order from the governor is coming, otherwise I cannot take that order as anything but a good suggestion."
- "Of course, I didn't seek to overstep my bounds," you say.
- "I understand, there is no trouble," replies General Zowt.
- You ask, "Can you think of any other leads I might check?"
- General Zowt says, "The Tanvu settlers that were caught over near Gaxton could be selling the information to the Gulgrethor. There has to be some reason why they Gulgrethor navy hasn't reacted to them by now."
- You say, "That's a good point. Thank you for your time."
Warden Narnix
- Warden Narnix barks a command over your shoulder to one of the prisoners, "Shut up, or you're next!"
- You say, "Warden Narnix, the war council needs you help."
- Warden Narnix Smiles. "What do they need?"
- "We believe a Gulgrethor spy is hiding in Martok and sending information back," you begin. "The attack on the Grimsea Watch was too well coordinated to be luck."
- Warden Narnix says, "So why are you asking me? Wait, you don't think it's me, do you?"
- You shake your head. "No, but there is a strong possibility that these Tanvu settlers might be selling the information to the Gulgrethor to stay alive."
- "Oh, that would be very unwise of them," says Warden Narnix. "Besides, I don't think the Gulgrethor would spare them long enough to consider that idea."
- You say, "Do not discount the cunning of the Gulgrethor. The betrayal by Karujin nearly destroyed the Martok and brought war to the continent of Thestra."
- Warden Narnix nods. "Had he been honorable, he would have been a great hero."
- You clear your throat. "Abut the spy."
- Warden Narnix says, "Yes, well, it's not any of these settlers. We're quite certain that they have not more secrets left to tell. But we could always squeeze them again to make sure." You hear frightened whispers from the prisoners.
- You contemplate things. "Do you have any other ideas of where the spy could be, or who?"
- Warden Narnix thinks for a long while. "Well, I believe that there is a Gulgrethor prisoner being held in Martok. You could ask him."
- You say, "It very well could even be him."
- Warden Narnix says, "I doubt it. Gulgrethor always work in pairs. They're sneaky."
- "Thank you, Warden Narnix," you say. "And keep your eyes open. If we don't catch that spy, all of Martok could be in grave danger."
Gulgrethor Prisoner
- The Gulgrethor Prisoner says, "Please, not more! I know nothing."
- You ask, "Having fun yet?"
- Gulgrethor Prisoner grunts, "The Gulgrethor will destroy the Martok. There is no hope against the chosen of Ghalnn."
- You smile. "Yes, which is why the Martok shall be victorious. Don't you know, the Martok have always been the chosen of Ghalnn."
- Gulgrethor Prisoner spits at you, "Your torture is as weak as your armies."
- "Who else is with you here in Martok?" you ask.
- Gulgrethor Prisoner glares at you and laughs.
- You say, "Are you saying you work alone? The Gulgrethor never work alone. They're too cowardly."
- "It was the Martok who cowered when Karujin slew their leaders and rove them into the wastes," says Gulgrethor Prisoner.
- You respond, "Karujin was a coward. He had to trick and betray the trust of the honorable warlords to gain his power. That is why he is dead and his spirit destroyed forever."
- Gulgrethor Prisoner looks upset. "Karujin had Harvester, the axe of Ghalnn. He is favored. If the warseers cannot see his spirit, it is because he still lives."
- You say, "So you think he will come back to rescue you and your friends?"
- Gulgrethor Prisoner says, "My rats don't need to be rescued."
- "Rats you say?" You smile. "So, the Gulgrethor have taken to using rats."
- Gulgrethor Prisoner stammers, "That's what we call each other. We're rates because we sneak in and listen."
- You smile. "I smell a rat."
Governor Jalixfin
- "Governor," you say. "I have news."
- Governor Jalixfin asks, "Have you found the spy?"
- You motion around you. "They're everywhere The Gulgrethor are using rats."
- "Like the rogues and their pets," says Jalixifin. "They must be able to speak to them somehow."
- You say, "It's likely that a shaman could pray to Nezi to communicate with the animals."
- Governor Jalixfin looks around. "Now that you mention it, there is a particularly fat one around here."
- You say, "We could kill them when we see them, but would that guarantee that we stopped all of them?"
- Governor Jalixfin says, "We'd have to post guards everywhere. We don't have that kind of personnel."
- "What about cats?" you pose, recalling the cats stalking around outside."
- Governor Jalixfin says, "Of course! We'll just round up all the cats we can find and scatter them around town."
- You ask, "Where would get enough cats quickly enough?"
- Governor Jalixfin says, "True. There must be something else. Wolves too?"
- You say, "No, the wolves would eat the cats."
- Governor Jalixfin ponders, "What if we just carry cats with us?"
- You smile. "I imagine that Warchief Zowb would look quite amusing carry a cat with him everywhere."
